Post card of the Delaware Springs Sanitarium. Dr. L. A. Bumstead founded the sanitarium in 1914. Its original purpose was as an osteopathic hospital. The east wing was constructed in 1915; construction of a second, west wing, was finished in 1921. It functioned as a health resort and spa until, facing financial difficulties, it was sold to the trustees of Jane M. Case Hospital in 1928.

Postcard of the Jane M. Case Hospital. Formerly the Delaware Springs Sanitarium, the spa was sold to the Trustees of the Jane M. Case Hospital in 1928, who recognized that growing demand for service required the hospital to expand. During the Great Depression bank closings froze hospital funds, but individual citizens of Delaware contributed funds in order to keep the hospital functioning. From 1934-1945 a tuberculosis sanitarium functioned in the east wing. The hospital expanded again in 1957.
