Description |
Photograph from the collection of (John) Howard Little, born in Delaware, OH, in September 1883 and died in Chula Vista, CA, in January 1965. Gifted photographically and mechanically as a youth and young man, Little had a strong interest in aviation and worked during WW I for the federal government as an airplane factory inspector. The handwritten inscription on the reverse of this photograph states: "Roy Knabenshue in his air ship flying in the state fair grounds Columbus, Ohio." Knabenshue was a native of Lancaster, Ohio, born in 1875, who helped popularize balloon aviation, not just in Ohio, but at exhibitions all across the nation. He put on displays at the Ohio State Fair from 1905 through 1908, and Little obviously saw him here. See Tom D. Crouch, "Chauffer of the Skies," in TIMELINE magazine, April-June 2011. |
